Abrupt exit for high-flying Reuters editor

Dayan Candappa (photo), a top editor at Reuters, left the company suddenly on Friday to be replaced temporarily by Washington bureau chief Kevin Krolicki.

Editor-in-chief Stephen Adler, announcing the change to editorial staff, gave no reason for Candappa’s unexpected departure as Americas editor beyond saying he was leaving the organisation “to pursue opportunities outside Thomson Reuters, effective immediately”.

He added: “I would like to thank Dayan for his many contributions since joining Reuters as a stringer in 2000. We wish him well.”

Adler said Krolicki would continue to oversee the Washington bureau as he takes on his additional responsibilities as interim regional editor responsible for editorial operations in the Americas. He reports directly to Adler.

Krolicki is a former US West Coast bureau chief, Detroit bureau chief and Japan bureau chief. He joined Reuters in 1996 as a producer for what was then Reuters Financial Television and became its Asia editor. He was named Reuters Editor of the Year in 2013 “for his exceptional work in Japan”. Adler said that, “in all his roles, he has proved himself a strong journalist and a thoughtful and creative leader”.

Candappa, who joined Reuters in his native Sri Lanka, had been seen as a rising star. He became Americas editor in December 2013 after a series of promotions and was seen by some as a potential editor-in-chief. ■
