Ron Howard Memorial Trophy presented to his golf club

An inscribed silver plate in memory of the late Ron Howard was presented to his local golf club on Tuesday. Colleagues of Howard, who died on 17 October 2008 aged 65, were on hand for the presentation.

Subscription for the Ron Howard Memorial Trophy was raised by Howard's friends, colleagues and golfing partners John Owen-Davies, Jim Foley, Roger Jeal, Ian Mackenzie, Barry May, Colin McIntyre, Dave Nicholson, Rick Norsworthy, Paul Smurthwaite, Graham Stewart and Jeremy Toye.

Howard’s widow Carol formally presented the trophy to Marlborough Golf Club near their home in Wiltshire.

The annual contest for the trophy is a Limited Club Competition, in which players are allowed to choose a restricted number of clubs in addition to a putter. The fewer clubs, the higher the extra stroke allowance. So, for example, for just one club the allowance would be 14; for seven clubs it would be one. This is a new club competition being played at Marlborough for the first time. "We thought it was a competition that would have appealed to Ron," a club spokesman said. ■
