Wanted: young reporters for Reuters internships

Reuters is recruiting students or recent graduates for a crash-course in business, political and general news reporting over six to 10 weeks next summer.

The paid internships will start in June 2015 and could lead to a place on the organisation’s nine-month graduate trainee journalism programme which begins in September.

“Every intern will report to a senior editor and be assigned a journalist mentor to provide advice and guidance. They are expected to write regularly and deliver in-depth stories during their assignment,” the agency said.

Interns will receive several days of formal training before they start work. The training will focus on writing skills, journalism ethics and basic financial knowledge.

There will be six positions for interns to spend eight weeks in the Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Beijing bureaus, six for six weeks in London, and 10 for 10 weeks in New York, Washington, Toronto, São Paulo and Mexico City.

Candidates should have some prior journalism experience and knowledge of economics, business, law, accounting or computer science. Fluency is in English is required; knowledge of Arabic, German, Mandarin, Portuguese or Spanish are desirable.

Interns who excel may be considered for other opportunities, including the Reuters Journalism Program or junior reporting roles. The intensive Journalism Program, which begins every September in New York, London and Singapore, offers nine months of training and leads into a staff job if required standards are met.

The deadline for internship applications is 1 December. ■
