Reuters changes its Style Guide: it's Black with a B

Reuters updated its Style Guide on Friday to capitalise the word Black when describing people, culture, communications and institutions.

Senior editors acknowledged a number of news organisations and public institutions had changed their style in recent weeks.

“We agree with this approach and, with immediate effect, are making the same change. The Reuters Style Guide will be updated to reflect this new guidance,” they told staff.

“In the coming weeks, we will continue to discuss and explore ways of updating diversity-related issues in our style guide, working closely with our new employee networks.”

A note about the change was signed by Tiffany Wu, global managing editor for editing, curation and publishing, Alix Freedman, global head, ethics and standards, and Nicholas Tattersall, head of the global news desk. ■
