Reuters appoints website managing editor

Reuters has appointed a new managing editor for its website reuters.com.

She is Leela de Kretser (photo), a media consultant who was formerly editorial director and publisher of New York neighbourhood news start-up DNAinfo. She began her journalism career in Melbourne, Australia, on the Herald Sun

Announcing the appointment, Reuters digital executive editor Dan Colarusso told staff: “As Managing Editor, Leela will oversee the day-to-day editorial operations for the site and work closely with me to develop strategies around better showcasing Reuters journalism, focusing on mobile users and growing the overall audience and influence of our consumer experience.” She starts work on 24 August.

Separately, former US West Coast bureau chief Jonathan Weber is returning to Reuters to take up the new job of global technology editor. He will start on 7 September and be based in New York.

Eric Effron, editor in charge, company news, Americas, said Weber would be responsible for leading Reuters’ coverage “not of the technology sector per se, but rather of the many ways technology is transforming and disrupting how we work and live - from healthcare and hospitality, to media and manufacturing, to finance and education”. He headed the West Coast bureau from 2011 to 2014.

Weber is the second former staffer to rejoin in the past week. Jim Finkle returned to cover cyber security out of the Boston bureau. ■
