The report The state of women in US media in 2019: Still f’ing abysmal - especially at Reuters and the AP made interesting reading. But I wonder if you can use a diversity study of US newspaper bylines as a yardstick. Can you tell nowadays if the name you see is a man’s or a woman’s?

Look at Glenn Close, Cameron Diaz and Sean Young. John Wayne’s real name was Marion. Reading the newspaper this morning I came across a woman named Adrian. ■
