Brian Mooney walks the wrong way for a pizza

Brian Mooney (photo) has just finished the return leg of a walk to Rome - 2,100 km on foot over 69 days from St Peter’s to his home in Coggeshall, Essex.

He trekked to Rome in 2010 and wrote a book about the journey - A Long Way for a Pizza. On his return a friend had reminded him that in the Middle Ages pilgrims did not have the luxury of flying home, so two years on he decided to complete the journey by walking back. He varied the return route, crossing the Alps over the Theodule Pass from Cervinia to Zermatt and walking through Paris rather than via Rheims. He says that if he writes a book about his latest walk it will be called The Wrong Way for a Pizza. ■
