Thomson Reuters adjusts pay for Cairo bureau staff

After months of negotiations and a one-day strike Cairo bureau staff reached agreement with Thomson Reuters on a new salary structure.

The company agreed late on Friday to increase base salaries and temporary monthly allowances to help staff weather expected future declines in the value of the Egyptian pound and record inflation.

Staff had argued that because of successive devaluations and Egypt’s sharp economic downturn the dollar value of salaries had reduced by about half since March 2022.

A strike by nearly 50 journalists on 23 November, which halted the Arabic service for 24 hours, was supported by the Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate. ■
