Too soon, Reuters kills off financier George Soros

Reuters accidentally killed off billionaire financier George Soros on Thursday when it published an obituary prematurely.

“The remarkable thing is how harsh it is, basically calling the fund manager a hypocrite, and talking about all of the crises he supposedly caused by making currency bets,” US website Business Insider noted.

In the opening line, the obit (see screenshot below) called Soros, 82, “predatory”. It also described him as “an enigma, wrapped in intellect, contradiction and money”.

Moments after the story went live, Reuters tweeted that it published the obit in error and said “Reuters withdrew the article as soon as it appeared”.

Reuters later published the following under the headline “Soros obituary published in error; financier is alive”:

“Reuters erroneously published an advance obituary of financier and philanthropist George Soros. A spokesman for Soros said that the New York-based financier is alive and well. Reuters regrets the error.” ■
