Manfred Pagel - wise and helpful counsel

No issue daunted Manfred. He would reflect carefully. His counsel was always wise and helpful. I enjoyed working with him over many years.

When I merged GND and RES, Michael Nelson approved the plan because I proposed Manfred as editor. Some of the old stalwarts on the fourth floor didn’t like that and gave Manfred a hard time.

He came through it all manfully and with distinction.

He was always very concerned about the welfare of his staff and spent many hours with individuals who had problems, something for which he was not credited by those who did not khow his caring side, particularly those who bitterly envied his elevation to the editorship. ■
