Manfred Pagel was a mensch

I join with others in remembering Manfred not only for his commitment to Reuters journalism but also for his friendliness. I was little more than a year into a correspondent’s assignment in Tel Aviv when we met on my 1986 secondment to Reuters HQ at 85 Fleet Street. I mentioned that my wife and I had met in her small Illinois home town outside St Louis where it turned out that Manfred had fond memories from his childhood years. The warmth of our conversation deepened my commitment to Reuters then and has remained a source of strength ever since. May his memory be a blessing. ■
