Brendan Boyle: spearhead to Mandela

Brendan Boyle was a spearhead in Reuters world-beating multi-media coverage of Nelson Mandela’s “long walk to freedom”, prison to presidency. 

His network of political contacts and his deep knowledge of South African politics during and after apartheid was unrivalled, giving depth and breadth to our reporting. 

He was a first class colleague, unhesitatingly sharing his knowledge, perspective and information with the rest of the team. 

Most notably, he helped Reuters win Mandela’s first international TV interview after taking office.

Brendan was a terrific colleague and friend. He will be sorely missed. ■
