Life After Reuters: David Brough's New Chapter in Jewellery Journalism

David Brough worked for Reuters across the globe for 30 years, but a chance reporting assignment in Italy set him on an unexpected new path -- publishing a magazine on the jewellery industry.

Brough’s fascination with the world of jewellery began in January 2001, when he was assigned to cover Vicenzaoro, a gold jewellery fair in Vicenza, Italy.

Captivated by the glamour of the trade, he took every opportunity to write about it while still at Reuters.

In 2016, Brough made the leap from Reuters and developed Jewellery Outlook  (www.jewelleryoutlook.com), a digital magazine focused on the international gems and jewellery sector.

It has since earned recognition in major export markets, including India and Thailand.

Most recently, on August 1, 2025, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India honoured Jewellery Outlook with an award during the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS Premiere) in Mumbai, the country’s largest jewellery trade event. The citation praised Brough for “exceptional gems and jewellery journalism.”

Brough had previously won an award at the Bangkok Gems & Jewellery Fair in 2020, from Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, recognising his contribution to promoting Thai exports.

“My years at Reuters instilled in me a commitment to accuracy, speed, and a global outlook—qualities that continue to guide my work in jewellery journalism,” said Brough, now 63.

“Covering hard news taught me how to identify compelling stories and tell them with clarity, a skill that translates seamlessly to the dynamic world of luxury and design.”

Brough began his career at Reuters in 1985 as a graduate trainee and went on to assignments in the United States, Ecuador, Venezuela, Cyprus, Portugal, and Italy.

While based in Rome, he shared the 2002/03 A.H. Boerma Award from the UN Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) with Brazilian journalist Marcelo Canellas for their reporting on global hunger issues.
