André's enthusiasm

My first meeting with André was in Beirut in the early 1970s. I was bureau chief there and he was on a brief trip from London, promoting the revolutionary new Monitor concept to Lebanese bankers. The city was a major financial centre and still relatively peaceful, despite turmoil in the region.

I was struck by André’s enthusiasm for Reuters technology and his grasp of the money markets. I remember thinking he looked so young that he would need to work hard, on both fronts, to convince the shrewd Levantine financiers that Reuters had invented something they would need to buy. He clearly succeeded.

Years later when I moved from editorial into Reuters management, I came to know André as a close colleague and friend. He played a significant role in my career, positive, stimulating and, I must say, entertaining. Looking back, I am very grateful.

To Lisa and André’s family, Marie-Hélène and I offer our deepest condolences and sympathy at this sad time. RIP. ■
