Howard Goller joins Reuters Americas desk as deputy editor for news

Howard Goller (photo) is moving from Washington to New York to join the Americas Desk as deputy editor for news.

Announcing the appointment, Americas desk head & deputy regional editor Tiffany Wu said that with his experience as a correspondent, desker and editor, he brings to the job a longstanding commitment to high standards, innovation and teamwork.

Goller said he would be fostering active, collaborative editing. “We need to produce a stand-out file at a time when, thanks to the Internet and 24-hour television news, we're competing with so many other real-time providers, including our sources with their own websites. The desk is the guardian of Reuters character and reputation. Tiffany, the other desk heads and I will be encouraging sub-editors to develop deeper working relationships with reporters to foster trust and creativity, especially on big stories when bureaux and other teams most need our help.”

Goller joined Reuters in the Middle East where he wrote and edited competitive stories from the Israeli-Palestinian frontline. He moved to London as deputy head, then head, of the World Desk responsible for political and general news in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In London and in his next job, as Washington-based editor for US political and general news, he fostered active, collaborative editing through regular feedback and drills on breaking news, and distinctive wrap writing. His team covering the 2008 US presidential campaign won the Reuters Multimedia Storytelling of the Year award.

In the US capital as Washington editor for professional news, he has been part of the team that four years ago launched news and insight for Thomson Reuters tax, accounting, legal and healthcare professional customers.

His new job starts on 1 July. ■
