Reuters merges sports, lifestyle, entertainment news with video and pictures

Reuters merged its sports, lifestyle and entertainment teams with video news and pictures under one global editor as part of its strategy of taking a multi-media approach to the world's major stories.

John Pullman (photo), who has global responsibility for video news and pictures, adds sports, lifestyle and entertainment to his duties. Ossian Shine, global editor for sports, lifestyle and entertainment, will report to Pullman.

Announcing the change to editorial staff, managing editor Paul Ingrassia said the multi-media strategy was why Reuters’ top text, pictures and television editors in its three regional news hubs closely coordinate their efforts every day.

“Sports, lifestyle and entertainment coverage requires a multi-media approach by its very nature," he wrote. "That is especially true for the world’s major sporting events: the Olympic Games, the World Cup, the Oscars and other big international events. Covering them well requires close coordination among text, TV and pictures, and this new structure will make this coordination more efficient. It also will allow us to continue and enhance some of the creative approaches to S-L-E coverage that Ossian and his colleagues have developed.  In addition to covering events, they are increasingly covering the human-interest stories and business angles behind the events.”

Pullman joined Reuters in 2010 after working at ITV News and the al-Jazeera television network. He became global head of video news in 2012 was given additional responsibility for pictures in 2014. ■
