James Gaines, former Reuters editor, joins The Atlantic

James Gaines (photo), former Reuters global editor-at-large and Americas editor, has joined The Atlantic’s creative marketing group.

As director of content of Re:think, he will oversee all content for the group, which creates native advertising and branded content campaigns.

“Jim brings expertise, energy, and authority to our growing native business,” publisher Hayley Romer said in a statement. “The breadth and depth of his experience will help further distinguish Re:think in an increasingly competitive environment.”

Gaines left Reuters at the end of December saying he took “no great pleasure in leaving”.

He had joined in 2011 as editor, ethics, standards and innovation based in New York. After five months he became editor, Americas, followed by three years as editor in charge, global photography.

Much of his earlier career was spent at Time Inc., where he was managing editor at People, Life and Time magazines. ■
