My good fortune, thanks to Bob Taylor

When I became Reuters bureau chief in Brussels in 2001 there were still senior European Commission officials who took my phone calls and leaked to me in the belief that I was Bob Taylor. As they weren't British, they didn't spot my lack of a Scottish accent. I made the most of my good fortune by eliding my first name so Paul almost sounded like Bob to an untrained foreign ear. RIP. ■
