Reuters bureaux in global moment of silence for Maria Golovnina

Reuters will observe a "global rolling moment of silence" on Thursday in memory of Afghanistan and Pakistan bureau chief Maria Golovnina (photo), who died suddenly on Monday.

Golovnina, 34, collapsed and was found unconscious at the Islamabad bureau. Medical teams were unable to save her.

Editor-in-chief Stephen Adler, in a message to editorial staff, wrote: “I know some of you have questions about the circumstances of her death. As we find out more and communicate with her family, we will keep you informed…”

In the meantime, the Islamabad team is getting all of the support they need, both in terms of trauma counselling and on-the-ground leadership.

Duncan Pitcairn, New York-based general manager for television and video who previously worked in the South Asian subcontinent, is in Islamabad and Jean Yoon, Asia region editor is making her way there from Singapore.

Both will be with the editorial team on Thursday as they hold a local memorial service for Golovnina.

“I’ve encouraged the rest of Reuters to participate in a ‘global rolling moment of silence,’ to be observed at 1000 local time Thursday in each bureau,” Adler wrote.

“As evidenced by the tremendous outpouring of support across the company, I know you all care deeply about Maria. We are still collecting memories and photos to share with her family.” ■
