Brian loved every minute of it

I’ll always remember Brian Bain walking into the Washington bureau the morning after the failed Iran hostage rescue mission in April 1980. Nattily dressed as usual in a light grey suit, he looked fresh and cool as a cucumber but in fact he’d been up all night wrestling with the story and had just taken a short break to have a shower before returning for another whole day’s work.

The bureau anthem at Brian and Barbara’s parties was Willie Nelson’s “Take this job and shove it, I ain’t working here no more!” Yet in reality Brian loved every minute of it, as I suppose we all did.

He was a great friend and colleague. I will miss him. My condolences to Barbara and his family. ■
