Paul Julius Reuter started his first news and stock price information service between Brussels and Aachen, Germany on 28 April 1850. He used 45 trained carrier pigeons provided by an Aachen brewer, baker and pigeon breeder.

Brian Cathcart, press reform campaigner and former Reuters correspondent, will be giving an online talk on Thursday 18 April 2024 at 5pm BST (London time) entitled: UK journalism is in trouble: what can be done to save it? Journalism has a simple job: providing citizens with information they can rely on and use. In the UK, for some understandable reasons and some very bad ones, it is currently doing that job very badly. Brian Cathcart will dissect the problems and examine what can be done to make things better, both in the short term " by the next election " and the long.
