Reuters data centre at Hauppauge to close by January

Phasing out the Hauppauge Technical Center (photo) is moving more quickly than expected and the transition to a commercial real estate services firm should be complete by January 2017.

The news was given by Thomson Reuters recently to the NewsGuild of New York which has been negotiating an enhanced severance package for 15 of its members at the Long Island facility. It was opened by Reuters in November 1982. 

“Even though we are all a bit surprised at the suddenness of this event, we are very grateful that all our Guild colleagues have been unwavering in their support of us,” said Hauppauge shop steward Gerry Rutan, who serves on the Guild bargaining committee. “The enhanced package that the Guild bargained for us is tremendously important to all of us as we go forward.”

Real estate services firm CBRE is likely to offer jobs to some of the affected workers, according to Thomson Reuters. Notification is expected by mid-November. ■
