Connoisseurs of Ron’s near unique sense of humour will appreciate this: he was driving through Utah’s Monument Valley with Carol and friends a few years ago when we came upon a giant rock column with a great boulder perched, precariously and menacingly it seemed, several hundred feet above. We passengers were slightly reassured by Carol’s report from the guide book that the rock had been up there for about 50 million years, but this was not good enough for Ron: “It would be just our luck,” he said.

Ron’s world view could help to restore balance. I recall telling him with some emotion about my bus trips to a north London quarantine kennel to visit our cat. He listened politely as always but then said:
“Well, as far as I’m concerned, a cat is just a bag of fur that leaks at both ends.”
Five cats later, I must say he did have a point!
I’ll miss him as a stalwart friend and gracious host, and will always be grateful for his advice on prostate cancer – an affliction we had in common.

Working with Ron on the London Business Unit helped me think beyond the more specialist economic news coverage of the “econ” desks and adopt a broader approach to business news. This has been very useful to me in running business journalism workshops for participants from around the world. Ron was so helpful and patient and a great colleague. Cancer is cruel but particularly so for such a nice bloke.

Apart from being a thorough and careful journalist, Ron Howard was simply a very nice man. One of the aspects of his personality I remember most vividly and fondly was his self-deprecating sense of humour. Ron knew that some people regarded him as a worrywart, so if in the newsroom or in the pub one were to tell him some unsettling international or personal news, he would look seriously concerned and remark in a tremulous voice: “Oh dear! I’ve got something to worry about now.”
