The good old days
Thursday 06 October 2011
Even those of us who were once part of “the support team” would agree with Michael Reupke’s observation. We felt the same way.
My very first visit to the salt mines was when Britain was feeling it’s way into the EEC in the days when Bob Taylor reported from Brussels. A team went to Luxembourg for the negotiations and outcome. Team meant Bob Taylor, Jonathan Fenby, Mohsin Ali, Ron Cooper and others, I think. I was the support act helping to keep the “specials” at bay.
I can still see Mohsin Ali strolling nonchalantly into the comms area in the wee small hours with his snap – I’m sure it must have been a snap – that he/we wanted to get onto the wire before anyone else caught up with him. For my first working trip out of London I saw Brussels airport, the road to and from Strasbourg and the inside of the conference centre, and nothing else for three days and nights. But, as Sid Rice pointed out when I returned to London, I shouldn’t complain. After all, I got to ride in an airplane!

Gilbert Sedbon

I got to know Gilbert when as Diplomatic Correspondent I would be sent, usually assisted by Mohsin [Ali], to cover international meetings in Paris. He would be one of our reporting team: so full of energy, enthusiasm and charm, he contributed more than his share to the success of our coverage. Then, when the day's (and night's) work was done, we would all relax in a restaurant and joke about what had been going on. Gilbert was one of the old school, in the best sense of the phrase. You would never think that he and Yolande had suffered the shock of being expelled like other foreigners at short notice from their home in Egypt. It's my regret that we never met again in recent years.

This is such sad, sad news. I worked with Ronnie on numerous international conferences, etc and learned so much from his integrity, patience, moral and physical courage and above all his journalistic objectivity. He quietly, determinedly followed Schopenhauer's rule of objectivity: unhinge the self until you feel no fear or hate.
We also had our war-time days in common and one will not see the like of him again.
As WH Auden said, the quality of the affection – in the end – is in the trace it leaves in the mind. Love for Ronnie will always remain deep in my mind and heart. May his soul rest in peace.

Arthur Spiegelman
Saturday 21 February 2009
I was stunned to read the shocking, sad, sad, sad news about Art's passing away. What can one say at an awful time like this. I just pray that his noble soul will rest in peace. God bless his dearest family.
Naturally, he will always be in my thoughts and prayers. I have such pleasant, happy memories of dear ‘Art', who was such a loyal friend and remarkable Reuter colleague. Art was a fine, objective journalist with great integrity. He worked so efficiently and with a great sense of proportion, humour and integrity. Art indeed rendered to our beloved news agency great, loyal service. He will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
As Ezra Pound said, “The quality of the affection – in the end – is in the trace it leaves in the mind.”
Respect and love for the unique Art is carved in my heart.
